The Friday Report

I’ve been looking forward to this week’s weigh in for a few days because I’ve noticed that my face looks thinner and my clothes are fitting a bit looser around the middle.  I was concerned that I’ve been constantly hungry this week and it seemed that I ate a lot more than I did last week but I always met my calorie goal for the day, so no worries, right??
Imagine my disappointment when I stepped on the scale this morning and saw that I actually gained weight.  UGH!!!!!  I weighed in at 378.6, up 0.6 lbs.  I can’t let this derail me.  I’m going to keep going with my nutrition but make an effort to eat more “nutrient dense” (thanks Shelly) foods so that I’m not hungry and snacking all the time.  I’m also going to step it up with the exercise.  Last Sunday, I worked out with my friend @Fit__Chick and I’ll work out with her again this Sunday but I have to make an effort to exercise more.

  2. Remember muscle weighs more than fat so if you are losing inches and not so many pounds don't get too discouraged the pounds will come off but sometimes they are not as impressive as the measurements.

Hi Tamara! I know you thought I'd forgotten about your request too check out the blog. I'm glad to see that you've "TAKEN CONTROL"! Congrats dear. As a personal trainer, I am over-joyed. But as your friend, words can't discribe how I feel, I am so, so happy for you. I just read your post from what looks to be yesterday and well, you know it wouldn't be me without comment. But this is relative to things I've seen working with people over the years.
First thing...the "SCALE". My first couple of years as a trainer, I rode around with peoples scales in my car. I would take them away because people would get so hung up on the numbers. If you can, try to stay away from the scale. I mean, 0.6 pounds...? The other person that commented on the muscle/fat thing is right. I'd weigh my clients once a month. But here is another reason...
    Second thing...
Women...most of clients are women and over the years, I've learned a lot from you guys. (Not difficult, given that I believe women are smarter than men anyway, but that's another story). Anyway...I've learned lots about female physiology. If you are on a weight loss endeavor and you're of child bearing years, your weight can bounce up and down for most, if not all, of any given month. When you are in your late 20's and 30's, this is can be anywhere from 5 to 15lbs up or down. REASON...you are cycling. And because of this, you only have one good week in a month where your weight could be stable enough to get an accurate, true measure. Think about it, you are either on your way up...you're on...or you're coming down from your cycle. this accounts for about 3 weeks of any given month. Thus...the 5 to 15lbs....
Third thing...I love the show "The Biggest Loser"! It's my favorite. But always remember, "IT'S T.V." One of the things I tell my clients...you don't see what these people are doing those other 6 days the show doesn't air. they can weigh every week because they are working hard, very hard, every day. With teams of trainers and medical staff at their disposal. We regular folks are at the office when they are working out, resting, and have plenty of time to cook. We are still hustling with everyday life. No excuses here, just don't get to caught up....
#4... yeah i know, i only said two things. but again, i love people and I love to talk. And Tamara is one of my favorite people. Anyway, American College of Sports Medicine "recommends"
one pound a week weight loss. The slower is comes off, the easier it is for it too stay off. At least that's their ideology. I take issue with this having worked with my lovely African American sista's. As a trainer, you tell a sista 1 pound a week and you get nice beat down. I tend to try to stretch this equation to about 2 too 2.5 a week. It is possible to maintain this level of loss and maintain good psychological fitness. The psych fitness is very, very necessary because it helps to keep you going. So, don't get too discouraged if you only loose 2 lbs in a weeks time. but then,I don't recommend the scale every week. But if you can't help but do so, again, it's nothing wrong if you only get 2 a week.
Now, about YOU more specifically. I noticed the other day, after not having seen you in a long while, that there was a significant change. Before you and I engaged in conversation, I asked Scott, and he confirmed my thoughts. YOU ARE DOING VERY WELL. I said too him, "she's losing weight". Again, i think what you're doing is great. WATER, WATER, WATER Much love for you... David.
